Your Master's Voice...
I'm 6 weeks into the job now! The Installation Dinner went well and I was pleased to have Judith Lowe, the next Master Goldsmith, as a special guest! The New Master's Reception was a sell out, probably because Margaret Casely- Hayford, Chair of Action Aid UK was making an appearance!
As you prepare for the festive season with friends and family please take a moment and think about what contribution you'd like to make to our "Great Modern Livery Company" over the next 12 months.
We need help for our many pro bono projects and certainly your assistance in recruiting people who can benefit from being involved.
This week we will be saying thank you to Past Masters Alan Broomhead, Patrick McHugh and Vicky Pryce for their many years of outstanding service to the Court! Long may they be involved.
I look forward to seeing you at the Company Christmas Lunch on 5th December at Ironmongers' Hall.
Noorzaman Rashid, Master

"The wire trick having been consigned to the dustbin of history, the next step was to do some ornithological research which revealed that the heron like to reconnoitre their fishing grounds with a quick overflight before swooping in for the kill; and I therefore stretched a cardboard cut-out of a shark over the top of the pond..."

Worshipful Preparations for new Brexit cultural marketing hazards....
Cracking the international markets on the Brit Free Trade crusade shouldn't be too difficult. We can learn the lessons from the big multi-nationals to avoid running into trouble owing to language and cultural differences. As in the following examples…
The name Coca-Cola in China was first rendered as Ke-kou-ke-la. Unfortunately, the Coke company did not discover until after thousands of of signs had been printed that the phrase means "bite the wax tadpole" or "female horse stuffed with wax" depending on the dialect and nasal intonation. [This can even be distorted by large tealeaves getting stuck in the teeth]. Coke then researched 40,000 Chinese characters and found a close phonetic equivalent, "ko-kou-ko-le," which can be loosely translated as "happiness in the mouth."
In Taiwan, the translation of the Pepsi slogan "Come alive with the Pepsi Generation" came out as "Pepsi will bring your ancestors back from the dead."
Too bad also for the Marketing Dept that in Chinese, the Kentucky Fried Chicken slogan "finger-lickin' good" emerged as "eat your fingers off."
Plus the American slogan for Salem cigarettes, "Salem - Feeling Free," got translated for the Japanese market into "When smoking Salem, you feel so refreshed that your mind seems to be free and empty."
And when General Motors introduced the Chevy Nova in South America, it was apparently unaware that "No Va" means "it won't go." Eventually the company figured out why it wasn't selling any cars....
But Management Consultants ALWAYS learn from their mistakes.....!
