Given the London Stock Exchange Group’s purchase of Borsa Italiana in 2007 ....

...could this now provide a novel opportunity for the City of London as we exit the European Union?

Liveryman Michael Rutherford, who specialises in international trade and emerging market opportunities, hosted an event in the City with Italian-based think-tank "Select M!lan", who since 2013 have worked to build on the Anglo-Italian exchange relationship to promote London’s presence and access within the European Union.

With recent elections in Italy and to encourage a first-hand insight into the possible economic outcomes for the City, a lunch was organised in the Guildhall Members' Club to which Aldermen, Common Councillors, Livery Companies, senior business executives and the media were invited.

Planning for an initial group of twenty became significantly oversubscribed, with many potential participants turned away;  and the event eventually expanded to entertain circa forty participants.

Speakers included the newly elected Senator Armando Siri, a proponent of the controversial flat rate tax rate for business;  a guaranteed minimum state income;  and re-negotiation of the terms of membership for Italy with the European Union.

There was opportunity for all participants to explore a range of views on the economic direction Italy may take and how this may present opportunities to those operating in, or considering entering the Italian market.

The essential message was that Italy, and particularly Milan, was open for business with the United Kingdom, the City of London and keen to build further on their already established links with the Stock exchange.

The opportunity to hear and discuss these views was welcomed by all attending, with many observing that it was important to develop first-hand knowledge about the European economic and political landscape and its potential impact on the City of London.
