- The Sheriffs Challenge for London...
Sheriff Peter Estlin launched the Sheriffs Challenge for Schools -supported by modern Livery companies (mostly Financial Services Group members) - a speaking and debating competition. WCoMC supported Oasis Academy Hadley, a specialist maths school. Our Team was mentored by the Master, Noorzaman Rashid and Freeman Rhonda Best. The schools' proposition was "The most important issue you consider to be facing London: and Why?" We are delighted to report that - despite having no previous public speaking experience - the team of 7 pupils from Hadley were runners up in this prestigious award! The finals were held in the famous Court Number One at the Old Bailey and Judges nominated the winner.
- Record numbers at Shop Talk...
The Mistress Kulbir Shergill, Freeman, with Freeman Rachel Whitehouse, delivered the most successfully-attended Shop Talk event on 28th March, with over 40 attendees. Martin Blackburn, Head of People at KPMG Uk shared his experience of the HR issues facing professional service firms. The issues discussed included just-in-time learning for consultants; pay and bonuses no longer a big factor in retention; the requirement to acknowledge individuals for what they are (regardless of gender; sexuality; race etc). Just as importantly, he raised the issue of millennials wanting to know how they were being measured and why; and in particular the need to build on strengths rather than weaknesses, to achieve higher retention and productivity. Perhaps the biggest shock for Partners in the audience who retired over 1 year ago was the fact that millennials entering the big firms do not have a 5-year view of their careers. They are mostly interested in what they will be doing in the next couple of years!
Please register for the next Shop Talk featuring Anthony Philips " Wellness - the next competitive edge on the war for talent". 27th June
- Mistress Tour of Goldsmiths' Hall...
Well what a coup for Kulbir Shergill, our Master's consort! She pulled off the first ever private tour of Goldsmiths' Hall earlier this month with over 30 other consorts from across the great 12 and Modern Livery companies in attendance. Lunch afterwards was served at Ironmongers' Hall. The speaker, Lady Lenzie shared her experience as Mistress Clockmaker with the group. This initiative was part of our approach on building relationships across the Livery movement and promoting the work and reputation of the Worshipful Company of Management Consultants.
Continuing to Maintain that healthy level of insanity in the client workplace….
-Respond to a serious question with: 'I don't know what to say, obviously I'm flattered, but it's all happened so fast'.
-Babble incoherently at a fellow employee then ask "Did you get all that, I don't want to have to repeat it".
-Page yourself over the intercom. (Don't disguise your voice.)
-Shout random numbers while someone is counting.
-Come to work in army fatigues and when asked why, say, "I can't talk about it".
-Phone someone in the office you barely know, leave your name and say "Just called to say I can't talk right now. Bye".
-Walk sideways to the photocopier.
-If you have a glass eye, tap on it occasionally with your pen while talking to others.
