Issue 31:  June 2016

Your Master's Voice:

June has been a month of exceptional events – the Queen’s 90th Birthday, the Referendum campaign and its outcome, the consequent turmoil within our main political parties, the opportunist reaction in Scotland and on the continent and so on and on. Uncertainty is of course anathema to management and investors but a delight to hedge funds, entrepreneurs and others who see it as a great opportunity (if they manage to make the right calls). Our clients and partners may also feel greater need for support in periods like this and we may need to chew over the many, many unknown and - perhaps - unintended consequences ourselves, as they emerge.  It seems nothing significant will be decided for a month or so which means we can take our time to gather our thoughts and focus our efforts where they can have the greatest positive impact.

If members would like an informal event to discuss this among ourselves, I am sure it could be arranged.

Let me know.

David Peregrine-Jones,  Master

WORSHIPFUL BRAINSTORMING ....

Management Consultants thrust pre-schoolers aside, to prove their intellectual superiority...

Q.1. How do you put a giraffe into a refrigerator?

A: Open the refrigerator, put in the giraffe and close the door.

--This question tests whether you tend to do simple things in an overly-complicated way.

Q.2: How do you put an elephant into a refrigerator?

Wrong Answer: Open the refrigerator, put in the elephant and close the refrigerator door.

Right Answer: Open the refrigerator, take out the giraffe, put in the elephant and close the door.

--This tests your ability to think through the repercussions of your actions.

Q.3: The Lion King is hosting an Animal Conference.  All the animals attend except one. Which animal does not attend?

Right Answer: The Elephant. The Elephant is in the refrigerator.

--This tests your memory.

Having got the first three questions wrong, the Management Consultant still has one more chance to show their abilities.

Q.4: There is a river you must cross. But it is lurked by crocodiles. What to do?

Right Answer: You swim across. All the Crocodiles are attending the Animal Conference!
--This tests whether you learn quickly from your mistakes.

[Andersen Consulting Worldwide found that around 90% of the professionals they tested got all four of those questions wrong. But many little pre-schoolers got most or all of them right!]
