Supporting City Harvest
A day with City Harvest
As part of my objectives for the year I am asking Company members to join me in giving back, not just in financial terms but in hands on active ways too.
A Charity that the Company has been involved with as part of the City of London Corporations Livery Food initiative has been City Harvest.
City Harvest address two of London’s biggest problems: Food waste and food poverty, which leads to malnutrition. By re-distributing food that would otherwise be wasted, City Harvest make businesses more sustainable and more impactful.
City Harvest take food to grassroots organisations that feed some of our most vulnerable fellow Londoners: The oldest. The youngest. The newest arrivals and the people with the deepest roots in the city.
What will we be doing?
City Harvest runs a working warehouse which is a busy and fun environment. You can expect to be supported by a team leader and given a variety of food related tasks including: sorting large crates of fresh produce like potatoes or apples straight from the farm, into manageable sized containers; separating food by categories so the dairy, meat, fish, fruit and vegetables are stored in either chilled areas or ambient areas within the same category; helping manage volumes of bread deliveries by putting into ‘best before’ dated crates for delivery.
Volunteering with us is enjoyable and it is physical - you will spend much of the day on your feet. If you have a health condition which means you should not spend long periods on your feet, then we do not recommend this experience, and we cannot accept anyone with back problems or during pregnancy.
Volunteers
To support the day, I am looking for 11 of you to join me in a day of giving back. Some in the Warehouse and some people will get the opportunity to go out in one of the City Harvest vehicles making deliveries and seeing where the food goes.
So, to get involved please join those who have already put their names forward and email me at master@wcomc.org and I look forward to spending the day with you giving back to those much less fortunate that ourselves.
For those who cannot
For those of you who cannot join me on the day and feel you are able to contribute towards this fantastic charity, please go to the Just Giving page www.justgiving.com/page/1733580935988 to donate whatever you can be it £10, £20 or £200 . Thank you in advance
