The WCoMC Wine Course

Our course combines self-paced online learning with in-person tastings introducing the world of wine - in all its guises - from growing vines, to grape varietals, to wine making, to tasting and exploring different wine regions. The course therefore appears as an "event" in the Company Calendar that straddles up to six months. Booking is open both to Company Members and Non-Members who are logged in. The

Understanding Wine with Jancis Robinson

Our aim for this course is to help participants find wines they love by introducing the fundamentals of the wine world. We have negotiated a special partnership with the BBC Maestro wine course, hosted by Jancis Robinson, coupling the 27 online lessons of that course and her course materials, together with our briefing notes and the two in-person tastings that we are hosting. (These tastings need to be booked separately; tastings' participants do not need to join the Maestro course, but we do recommend course participants attend the tastings.)

Course participants can pace their online learning over the period from when they book and receive their login link for the course, until the Company Cellar tasting in May 2025.

Over the elapsed period of the self-paced online course, which is about six hours of study, participants will learn about the fascinating history of winemaking, wine tasting, food and wine pairing and even how to choose the best wine glasses for different occasions. Jancis will also discuss current wine trends like natural wine, orange wine and biodynamic wine, as well as taking a deeper look at sustainability in winemaking and how climate change is impacting the wine industry. Watch this short YouTube video for more details.

The two in-person tastings, organised by the WCoMC Wine Committee, which participants can book at a discounted price as part of the overall course package are:

There will also be a third, more comprehensive, tasting which will mark the conclusion of our wine course, at which course participants will be given their course certificates:

  • 7th May 2025 - tasting the Company Cellar

Our course will cost £75 and each participant can invite one guest to share the online lessons at a reduced charge of £33. Once booked, you will receive a copy of our course briefing notes, together with a link to register on the BBC Maestro course and receive their course materials. Each tasting will cost £20 for course participants. Course places are limited by the capacity of the Carmen's Hall, where we are holding the tastings. Please contact events-team@wcomc.org if you have any queries.
