CMCE Next Gen 2.0: Risky Business

This series of workshops will explore the fundamentals of behavioural economics, how they can be used reflectively to change how we think about business today, and what they mean for how we engage with the future of technology. Held jointly with Dr Edmond Smith, Senior Lecturer in Economic Cultures at the University of Manchester.

WORKSHOP 3: CAN YOU BE RATIONAL? - Now booking

The third session will introduce another key concept from behavioural economics – bounded rationality. This is the idea that, despite our efforts to act rationally, the bounds of what we know inevitably constrain our decisions. Instead, uncertainty is part of everyday life: we cannot know everything, and even what we do know is shaped by our education, knowledge and training. Through this discussion, we will gain a better understanding of the ways in which we look to understand and mitigate against risk, and to take advantage of opportunities, paying particular attention to longer term goals in life and work.

Our main speaker is Peter Knight, a professor of American Studies at the University of Manchester. He is an expert on cultural approaches to economics and finance, and conspiracy theories in American history. He is the author and editor of a dozen books, including the prize-winning Reading the Market: Genres of Financial Capitalism in Gilded Age America (2016), and most recently the co-written book Invested: How Three Centuries of Stock Market Advice Reshaped Our Money, Markets and Minds (2022). He was also one of the curators of the exhibition “Show Me the Money: The Image of Finance, 1700 to the Present.” He is currently directing several large team research projects on conspiracy theories in the age of the internet.

' Conspiracy theories used to be harmless fun, but now misinformation and disinformation threaten to undermine trust in impartial media, objective science and even democracy itself. But why, if most of the theories make little sense, do so many people believe in them?'

Our panellists are David Booth and Collette Stone.

David Booth, Director, IXQ Consulting Limited, has been helping organisations develop and implement their strategies for over 25 years, working with some of the UK’s leading organisations from the NHS to major financial institutions. Prior to this he spent 20 years in business management, working for companies including United Biscuits, Grand Metropolitan and Smith & Nephew, in senior roles across marketing, HR, and strategic development.

David’s book, ‘Strategy Journeys – a Guide to Effective Strategic Planning’ was published in 2017 and shortlisted for the Chartered Management Institute Management Book of the Year 2018. His articles have been published in Strategy Magazine and Project Management World Journal, and he is a Fellow of the Strategic Planning Society (FStratPS) and a Certified Management Consultant (CMC).

His recent work has included helping organisations to strengthen their strategic capabilities and adopt a more dynamic and responsive approach to strategy.

This is a very topical subject: after the past four years we are all increasingly aware just how uncertain the future is, and the limits of information to help us make decisions accordingly. This affects organisations as well as individuals, as they struggle to work through how to incorporate this into their strategising. I’m looking forward to what promises to be a very stimulating discussion!’

Collette Stone, Director of Insights & Options, a Buckinghamshire-based independent management consultancy, is skilled is in facilitating individuals and teams to find their voice, direction and purpose. Her work takes her across the public, private and charity sectors, where she brings a strong diagnostic focus honed as a founder member of the UK civil service’s cross-Whitehall Organisation Design and Development capability. Collette’s expertise is in partnering with senior leaders to get straight to the root of stuckness in team performance and surface options for finding a way through difficult ‘wicked’ business situations. Collette is also a member of external faculty for Henley Business School as MBA Supervisor, Action Learning Facilitator, Marking Tutor and Learning Coach. As a lifelong learner, in 2023 her curiosity began taking her in the direction of how generative AI can be deployed to deliver quality personal development experiences at scale.

‘Enjoy the emergent freedom of knowing there are no fully rational answers. We are 'surfing on the edge of chaos' more than ever, and always will be. So, 'rational enough' will do us fine, for now.’
