Annual Church Service and Reception

Please join us for the Gonfalon walk, Annual Church Service and Reception on Thursday 21 September.

The Gonfalon walk was instituted last year and is a 10 minute informal walk behind the gonfalon from Dyers Hall (where we will have been holding our Election Court meeting) to St James Garlickhythe, via Cannon Street. A brief chance to be noticed in the City on a working day!

Our Annual Church Service, which this year falls on the 300th anniversary of Wren’s death, will as usual be held at his beautiful church of St James Garlickhythe, a location that needs little introduction.

St James Garlickhythe is the Company’s church in Garlick Hill. It is a unique 17th century City Church and has been a sacred place since 1100AD. Sir Christopher Wren rebuilt St James in 1683 after the Great Fire to be full of light, since when it has become known as ‘Wren’s Lantern’.

A special feature of our service this year will be that PM Bob Garratt will be delivering a eulogy to his wife Sally, our late almoner. We are sure many friends of Sally will want to be present for this occasion.

Then, following the service, we will be having a reception with canapes and wine from our cellar, at Dyers Hall (just up the road at 10 Dowgate Hill). This is a rare opportunity to visit one of the smaller ancient livery halls. As a Company, we have not held an event there in recent memory.

Please come to the reception. It’s at a unique venue and will be a chance to catch up with friends after the summer break (especially if you missed the Summer Celebration at Charterhouse), and a chance to support Bob Garratt. It is also a great occasion to be present as we admit and then clothe Sheriff Andrew Marsden and Freeman Ranil Perera as liverymen. It will also be an opportunity to congratulate the newly elected officers of the Company and to thank those who are standing down from Court for their service to us.
