THE CHALLENGE OF INTERGENERATIONAL CHANGE

Intergenerational fairness has risen rapidly up the national agenda in recent years. From job and housing insecurity experienced by young people, to a social care system unfit to support older generations, Britain faces living standard challenges that affect different generations in different ways. Responding effectively to these challenges means understanding what's driving them, and how they can be addressed. This Daily Telegraph article sums the challenges up nicely.

The Intergenerational Centre at the Resolution Foundation has been set up as a home for analysis and policy thinking, looking at living standards through a generational lens. It recently published 'An Intergenerational Audit for the UK: 2019' in which the differences primarily between post-war baby boomers and subsequent generations were carefully analysed. There are challenges for both, for example, for an asset rich older generation and the next generation that must provide the money to pay for an ageing society. The report  makes quite disturbing reading. Careful analysis is at the core of the work of management consultants in the design of change programmes; but what are the changes that need to be made in order to address the issues highlighted by the Intergenerational Centre and is there practical wisdom that the management consulting community can beneficially bring to bear on this?

We are delighted that David Willetts, President of the Intergenerational Centre is to give this year's Change Lecture hosted by the Worshipful Company of Management Consultants at which these matters will be aired and there will be plenty of opportunity for everyone across the generational divide to debate the contribution that can be made both by management consultants and the City to address them.
