Masters Address - Welcome April 2009

Master 2008 Ian Daniell

One of my minor aims for my year as Master was to re-establish the Court of Assistants as the power-house of the Company. I think the excellent work done by the 3rd Warden in setting up the Cohort Scheme is an extremely good way of providing for the wider membership to feedback their congratulations or concerns to the Court.

I also believe that the Court, and myself as Chairman, are responsible to the membership and that the Annual Meeting is when we should give account of our stewardship. To that end, the first part of the meeting on 8 April will be purely in-house and your opportunity to present your views on how we are doing and in which areas we could do better. So please do come and have your say especially if you think we are doing really well, but please remember to notify the Clerk before Friday, 3rd April 2009.

Elsewhere In this letter we have included an important link for those of you working with charities, and a request from Past Master Eaton for support for his latest venture.

Finally it just remains for me to wish you and your families a very Happy Easter and to say how much I am looking forward to seeing you all at the Annual Meeting and the Spring Gala.

Masters Address - Welcome January 2009

These certainly are exciting times for all of us. While some think we are on the brink of a new world order and others see the end of the financial and banking system as we know it, I am excited by events closer to home.

At my reception in November I said that improving the way we communicate with each other and the wider professional community was vital to the Company and I am delighted with the progress we have made with this. The new website is a huge step forward, we now have a members-only LinkedIn site and the new members-only secure area will soon be accessible through the site and will give members greater access to each other.

The Annual Report is available here and is a splendid piece of work.

Then there is the first edition of our re-launched quarterly newsletter. We are feeling our way cautiously and are grateful for feedback on style, content and frequency of publication. This will be sent to all members and you are encouraged to share it with your friends and colleagues within the profession and in this way we hope to improve our reach and relevance.

None of this would have been possible without a great deal of work by members of our Communications Group for which I am most grateful and offer them my thanks on behalf the Company and friends.

The year started with a splash with our annual Charities Supper which was a sell out again this year with more than 100 members and guests attending, as well as a group from our sponsors Towers Perrin.

Finally, let me just say how much I am looking forward to seeing you and your affluent guests at the Spring Gala on the 7th May 2009.

Masters Address - Welcome December 2008

We have a full and challenging year ahead of us. We need to embed the changes of the last year and to move forwards. I am confident that the changes we have made to our membership arrangements will enable us to increase recruitment and improve retention. The following three areas of activity will not only enable us to fulfil our charter obligations but will further enhance our corporate image;

  1. Improved communication - will enhance this and enable us to fully engage with and involve our own members as well as getting a consistent and coherent message across to the profession.

  2. Pro-bono services - continue to impress and that, with our support of our chosen charities, is something we can, and should, be proud of.

  3. Fund-raising will increase the contribution we are able to make and our work on professional development should enable us to re-engage with the profession.

Finally it is my intention that we should do all of this with a sense of humour and fun to develop a fully committed and involved membership
